Livingston ESA News

Livingston County Schools have adopted a new truancy policy for this school year. Starting immediately, schools will use a 12-month rolling period to monitor attendance.

This means that, at any point in the year, if your student has 10 or more absences in the previous 12 months, they will be considered truant.

The goal of this change is to identify and address any barriers that may be keeping students from attending school. Consistent attendance is essential — it allows students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Frequent absences, for any reason, can disrupt this growth and make it harder for students to succeed.

Why Attendance Matters
Chronic absenteeism has serious long-term effects. Students who miss school frequently are:

  • More likely to feel socially isolated

  • More likely to experience anxiety and depression

  • 25% less likely to graduate from high school
