Comprehensive School Health Education
& Coordinated School Health
Comprehensive School Health Education: is part of the school curriculum for students K-12. Our goal is to improve the overall health status of adolescents and children in Michigan, resulting in healthy students who are ready and able to learn and become healthy, educated, and productive adults. The primary objective of this program is to advance comprehensive school health through expert consultation, collaboration with local schools and community groups and coordination of community resources, thereby enabling students to learn positive health behaviors, reduce risk behaviors and prevent diseases. Our Comprehensive School Health Education curriculum is the Michigan Model for Health. The Michigan Model for Health is an exemplary, evidence-based, health education program fro students in kindergarten through grade 12. It is based on Michigan’s health education standards and recommendations from experts in health promotion and risk prevention. Through a comprehensive health framework, the lessons provide the knowledge and develop the skills students need to support and enhance healthy lifestyles. Students are more likely to succeed academically and socially when they are healthy. Other components of Comprehensive School Health Education include Sexuality, Reproductive Health, and HIV & Other STD Education. Professional development and technical assistance provides schools with the necessary resources to meet legal obligations in these areas. Livingston ESA supports local schools in building Coordinated School Health (CSH) Programs by forming Coordinated School Health Teams (CSHT) at the local level. Schools by themselves cannot, and should not be expected to, address the nation’s most serious health and social problems. However, schools can be the facility in which many agencies work together to maintain the health and well-being of young people. CSJH teams can ensure collaboration of efforts across school buildings and the district. Representatives from other school committees, such as the local wellness policy committee, school improvement teams, etc., can be on CSH teams to maintain effective communication and maximize the use of limited human and financial resources.
